DAMIEN and Yilpi Marks are a formidable duo as First Nations artists go with a pedigree that is hard to match.
Damien was born in 1967 in Haasts Bluff, west of Alice Springs and was taught to paint in the dreamtime at a young age by venerable artists including Clifford Possum and Papunya stalwarts Billy Stockman and Uta Uta Tjangala.
With roots as rich as this, it is no surprise that Damien was to become such a respected artist, a man who paints largely with his wife Yilpi Marks, whose parents Tjulkiwa Atira-Atira and Nyukana Baker were both respected artists themselves.
Their Country is an always vivid assemblage of natural features and dreamings, the elements that rule their world and fuel their imaginations. They take such pride in their readings of country that almost every work they have produced is called the universal My Country.
