JOSEPHINE Lennon is a renowned First Nations artist who brings her perspective to country with beautiful and striking results. She has received significant recognition for her work including the prestigious Don Dunstan Prize at the 2016 Our Mob exhibition.
Having learned the practice of art at school, it is her older sister, mother and grandmother who remain her biggest inspiration. Her singular motivation is to keep her culture alive through her art.
This waterhole painting is from the Nullarbor, 400km west of where Josephine lives in Ceduna.
Josephine tells us there are multiple waterholes in the Nullarbor. Some people call them swimming holes.
"This is a perspective piece for my ancestors and represents the water flowing. The four waterhole symbols are waterholes. The brown dots represent the land. The waterhole in the middle represents water that flows throughout the land and water to become one."
